Landforms And Rivers Flashcards
Landform process
Changes that occur in landforms
Tsunami
A long high tidal wave caused by an undersea earthquake
Tidal wave
The bulge in the oceans surface caused by the pull of the moons gravity, which becomes high tide at each place it travels to
Storm surge
The sudden rise in sea level caused by high winds pushing towards the coastlines
What causes a tsunami?
- an earthquake on the ocean floor itself
- tremors race through the water and outward in a circular pattern
Why do earthquakes occur?
- thin skin of the arty is constantly twitching and trembling
- earthquakes occur because the planets skin (crust) is in motion
Earthquakes occur as plates are ripped apart, hauled together, or dragged alongside one another
The planet is like a round egg
Core (yolk):
Very hot, dense zone under intense pressure from the weight of overlying rock material
Mantle (egg white):
A zone of thick molten rock called magma, slowly moving in broad currents
Crust (eggshell):
Thin, brittle she’ll broken into several pieces called plates, and floating into the mantle
Epicentre
The breakpoint where earths plates move suddenly, causing an earthquake
Plate tectonics
The theory that all the continents were inched hounded together and are gradually drifting apart
James Hutton theory
Thought that earth has been built up and worn away many times
Alfred Wegener
Had the theory of Pangea and that all the continents were connected
Igneous rock
Solidified magma from inside earth
Metamorphic rock
Changed rock
Sedimentary rock
Thick beds of sediment that have slowly solidified into rock
How are folded mountains made?
Folded mountains are made of thick layers of sedimentary rock that are pushed together from the movie plates and fold over one another
