Physical Properties/ Changes Flashcards
What are the two types?
Qualitative and quantitative
What is a qualitative property
Involves the 5 senses
Hear, sight, smell, taste and touch
What is a quantitative property?
A measurement (numerical value)
Temp., height, density, mass, volume, solubility, etc
What sense are you using if you find the colour
Sight
What are the 3 states?
Solid, liquid and gas
What sense are you using if you find texture?
Touch
What kind of odours can you smell from a substance?
It can be spicy, burnt, odourless, etc
What types of lustre could a substance be?
The substance can be shiny or dull
What are some types of “clarity”?
Transparent, translucent, opaque
What does it mean if an object is opaque?
Has a solid look, you can’t see through it
What does it look like if an object is translucent?
It isn’t full see-through, but light can go trough it
Different types of texture?
Fine, coarse, smooth, gritty, etc
What does it mean to be malleable?
The shape of the object can be altered, some metals when heated can have their shapes changed
Why does ductility mean?
It means that the object can be shaped into a thin wire-like shape( like gum for example)
What is a melting point?
The temperature at which a solid will melt
