UK example of river landforms - the river tees

• The River Tees is in the north east of England.
• Its source is high in the Pennine Hills near Cross Fell.
• High Force waterfall is on the River Tees and is one of the UK’s most impressive waterfalls. It is located close to Forest-in-Teesdale in the river’s upper course and is followed by a spectacular gorge. The waterfall was formed due to a resistant band of igneous rock is followed by a softer / weaker limestone which is eroded more easily forming the waterfall.
• The River Tees has some excellent examples of meanders, levees and floodplains.

UK example of river management - the jubilee river

• The Jubilee River is a relief channel for the River Thames in south-east England.
• Funded by the Environment Agency and cost £110 million.
• UKs largest artificial channel.
• Designed to look like a natural river and has a nature reserve along one part of it.
• Low flow normally but when discharge is high the Jubilee River diverts water from the River Thames, preventing the River Thames from flooding, reducing flood risk in Maidenhead, Eton and Windsor.
• Issues with the scheme:
o Social – Expensive homes in Eton and Windsor have been protected, poorer homes in Old Windsor are more at risk of flooding.
o Economic – Expensive. The Environment Agency ran out of money and local councils and businesses had to pay. Those business also have high insurance costs.
o Environmental – flooding downstream where the river re-joins the Thames. Ugly structure in some parts. Algae collects behind the weirs which disrupt the natural ecosystems.
