physical landscapes Flashcards
what is hydraulic action
waves crash against rocks and compress air into the cracks. This puts pressure on the rock. This happens over and over again until rock breaks off.
what is abrasion
Erode particles in the water scape and rub against rock, removing small bits.
what is attrition
erode particles in the water smash into each other and break into small fragments. Their edges also get rounded as they rub together
what is physical weathering
Physical weathering occurs when physical processes affect the rock, such as changes in temperature or when the rock is exposed to the effects of wind, rain and waves.
what is chemical weathering
Chemical weathering involves the interaction of rock with mineral solutions (chemicals) to change the composition of rocks.
what is biological weathering
Biological weathering is caused by the movements of plants and animals. For example plants may grow in a crack and as the roots grow the rock will widen.
what are constructive waves
Constructive waves are low energy and have stronger swashes than backwashes. This means that any material being carried by the sea is washed up and begins to build up along the coastline.
what are destructive waves
hey occur when wave energy is high and the wave has travelled over a long fetch. They tend to erode the coast. They have a stronger backwash than swash.
