Physical Landscapes Flashcards
What does weathering mean?
wearing away and breaking down rocks where they are
What is erosion?
the weathering away and removal of rocks by a force such as a wave
What is compaction?
when the weight of many layers of broken rock causing the layers beneath to compressed, out water
What is burial?
when rocks are buried underneath many layers and exposed to high temperature and pressure
What is melting?
when rock changes from solid to liquid at high temperatures forming magma
What are the 5 stages of the rock cycle?
igneous rock gets spat out of a volcano which then breaks down into sedimentary rock then burying into metamorphic rock and becoming magma to be spat out of the volcano
What are the 3 types of weathering?
Biological, chemical and mechanical
What is biological weathering?
The wearing away and breaking down of rocks by plant roots or burrowing animals
What is chemical weathering?
The wearing away and breakdown of rock caused by a chemical change in that rock
What is mechanical weathering?
the physical break up of rock without any change in the rocks chemical composition
What rock is the highlands made up of?
Igneous rocks
How long did the Jurrasic period last for?
55,000,000
What is a tombolo?
A beach that joins an island to the mainland
What is longshore drift?
the movement of sediment along the beach in the direction of the wind
What are 3 ways mountains are important?
water storage, different rocks for building and habitat for wildlife
