Physical Geography - Water Pathways at the Earth's surface Flashcards
Where does water go: Interception
The process by which leaves of plants store rainfall as they act as a blockage by preventing rainfall from reaching the ground.
Where does water go: Stem flow
The process by which the remaining intercepted water trickles/flows down the stem/trunk of plants to reach the ground/earth’s surface.⬇️
Where does water go: Run-off
This is the process where water flows across the earth’s surface due to gravity because the soil is too saturated, it cannot take anymore water.
What’s another name for run-off?
surface run-off, overland flow
Where does water go: Infiltration
The process by which water enters the soil / is absorbed into the soil.⬇️
Where does water go: Through flow
The process by which water flows horizontally/laterally through the soil layer.➡️
Where does water go: Percolation
The process by which water moves downwards/vertically through the soil/rock layer.⬇️
Where does water go: Groundwater flow
The process by which water moves horizontally/laterally through the rock layer
