Q

what are the hypotheses for the investigation

A

Title- to investigate how river depth and load changes across the bend of a river.
1) the river is deeper on the outside bend.
2) the load is larger on the inside bend

Q

what kind of data will help answer the enquiries?

A

method 1- river depth- systematic sampling.
X people could’ve pushed the metre ruler too far. making the channel seem deeper.
+ more accurate results and reliable.
method 2 - bead load- systematic and random sampling.
Most people went to pick up the biggest rock.
X only one rock was picked up from each location.
X when people finished with the rocks the threw them back randomly which could skew results.
+ more accurate and reliable results.

Q

what are the ways we presented the field work?

A
  • to measure the depth of the river we collected primary data using a cross section graph.
  • the bedlam was presented with a line graph/ scatter graph

Q

describe and analyse and explain your findings (depth of the river)

A
  • the further away you travelled from the inner bend the deeper the river gets. You can see this as at 7/10 the depth of the river was at 35 48cm where as at 8m it was at 60cm.

Q

describe and analyse and explain your findings ( bed load findings)

A

the general trend is that the bed load gets smaller as you travel further towards the outside bend. for example at the inside bend the size of the sediment was around 675mm and at the outside bend the sediment was around 50mm. there are anomalies such as at 7m the sediment size was 750mm

Q

what is the conclusion for the original question and decide whether these are important. ( the river is deeper on the outside bend.)

A

the hypothesis was correct. the results show that it was the deepest on the outside bend compared to the inside bend. the inside bend was as little as 15cm deep at site 1 ranging to 33cm at site 5. form site 6 to 10 they all had deeper measurnests. the deepest being 63cm at point 10. this shows that the river is deeper on the outside bend

Q

what is the conclusion for the original question and decide whether these are important.(the load is larger on the inside bend)

A

the hypothesis was correct. the river bed sediment was mostly largest on the inside bend. relatively large measurements eg 675mm and 562mm. compared to the inside bed with 55mm and 91mm.

Q

how can we make the experiment better?

A

sample size- take more than one sample.
- wasn’t a representation of the whose river as only a small section was used.
Equipment used- human error could’ve contributed to some results as we measured the depth using a metre rule and our own eyes. se we made sure 2 students read the depth to improve accuracy.
time of survey- we should’ve repeated it multiple times a day to increase reliability.
location of survey- it was completed on one site of the river. increase reliability data should’ve been collected on more sides of the river.
