Physical Examination 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Peripheral vascular system examination
A
- Arms
- Legs
- Abdomen -> in the abdomen examination
2
Q
Peripheral vascular system examination arms
A
- Inspection -> arm
1) size, symmetry, skin color and texture
2) swelling
3) lesions
4) hairs
5) the venous pattern
6) nail beds - Palpation
1) palpate the pulses- Radial
- Ulnar
- Brachial
2) temperature (with backs of the fingers)
3) palpate epitrochlear nodes (3 cm above medial epicondyle, groove between the biceps and triceps)
- Tests
1) Capillary refill time
2) The Allen test (positive if palm is pallor (-abnormal))
3
Q
Peripheral vascular system examination legs
A
- Inspection -> legs
1) size, symmetry, skin color and texture
2) swelling, edema
3) lesions especially ulcers
4) hairs
5) the venous pattern -> look for varicosites-> better seen if patient stands up
6) nail beds -> color, lesions - Palpation
1) pulses- Femoral
- Popliteal
- Posterior tibial (below the medial malleous)
- Dorsalis pedis
3) palpate for edema
4) venous tenderness
5) inguinal lymph nodes (horizontal and vertical) - Tests
1) Homan sign
