Physical Components Of A Network Flashcards
Endpoints
These elements include devices such as PCs, file servers, printers, tables, sensors, cameras, and manufacturing robots.
Interconnections
These are components that connect the devices to the network. They provide the means for data to travel from one point to another in the network.
NIC
Translate computer data into a format that can be transmitted over the network. An NIC is the device on a PC into which you plug a network cable.
Network media
Such as cables or wireless media, provide the means by which signals are transmitted from one network device to another.
Connectors
Provide connection points for the media. The most common type of connector is the RJ-45. It is larger and contains eights wires instead of four.
Switches
These are device that endpoints such as PC, file servers, printers, sensors, cameras, and manufacturing robots typically connect to.
Routers
These devices connect networks and intelligently choose the best path between networks. There main function is to route traffic from one network to another.
WLAN device
WLAN devices connect wireless devices such as computers, printer, and tablets to the network.
AP (Access Points)
These devices allow wireless devices to connect to a wireless network. An AP usually connects to a router as a standalone device, but it can also be an integral component of the router it self.
WLAN controllers
These are device that network administrators or network operations center use to manage APs in large quantities. The WLAN controller automatically manages the configuration of the wireless APs.
Firewalls
These devices are are network security systems that monitor and control the incoming and out going network traffic based on predetermined security rules. The firewall typically establishes a barrier between a trusted, secure internal network and another outside network.
