Physical + Chemical Properties & changes Flashcards
physical properties include:
Hardness, state, malleability, ductility, melting/boiling point, crystal form, solubility, viscosity, density
What is a chemical property?
They describe substances by seeing how they react with other things. They tell us whether something is flammable or if it reacts with an acid or water.
Chemical properties include:
Combustibility, reaction with acid, reaction with water.
What is a physical change?
In a physical change the substance involved may change state, but not become a new substance (most physical changes are easy to reverse)
Physical change clues:
Melting, boiling, freezing, condensation, and sublimation.
What is a chemical change?
In a chemical change, the original substance is changed into one or more different substances that have different properties.
Chemical change clues:
A new colour appears, heat or light is given off, a solid material (called a precipitate) forms in a liquid, bubbles of gas are formed, the change is difficult to reverse.
What are physical properties?
Physical characteristics that are used to describe a substance or an object (we use our sense to describe them)
