Physical + Chemical Properties Flashcards
yes
Colour + Lustre
-lustre is the way substance reflects light
ex. shiny, dull, glossy, glassy, waxy, and pearly
Melting Point
-temp when solid turns into liquid
-atmospheric pressure
ex. water freezes at 0 C melting point is ) C sea level
Solubility
-maximum amount of substance
Boiling Point
-liquid changes to gas
-same temp as condensation
ex. 100 C sea level
Density
-amount of mass in a given volume of a substance
-temp effects density
ex. at 25 C, density of pure water is 1g/ml
Ductility
-any solid that can be stretched into a long wire
-copper is a ductile material
Crystal shape
-when particles in a substance line up in a regular pattern
-quarts forms long six-sided crystals and halite firms cubes
Conductivity
-ability to conduct electricity or heat
-conductor + insulator
-copper (conductor), glass (insulator)
Hardness
-resist being scratched and measured through a mohs scale ranging from 1-10
-tale softest 1 and diamond is 10
Texture
-the feel of a substances surface
-raw gemstone is rough, smooth when polished
Malleability
-a substance that can be pounded or rolled
-aluminum is an example
