Physical and Chemical Changes and Properties Flashcards
What are examples of physical properties?
It’s fine if you don’t think of all of them we’ve learned.
- Color
- Solubility
- Taste
- Hardness
- Malleability
- Melting and boiling point
- Ductility
- Texture
- Luster
- Conductivity (heat and electricity)
What is a physical property?
A characteristic that is observed or measured without changing the matter’s chemical composition.
What is a physical change?
A change in a substance that does not change what the substance is. It can mostly be reversed.
What is a chemical property?
A characteristic that is observed and measured during a chemical reaction.
What are examples of chemical properties?
It’s fine if you don’t think of all of them we’ve learned.
- Reactivity
- Flammability
- Light, sound, heat, bubble, or precipitate formation
- Ability to rust
- Oxidation (when an atom or ion loses an electron)
- Toxicity
- Reactivity to water
- Acidicity or alkalinity (basicity)
What is a chemical change?
A reaction that produces a new substance due to the atom’s rearrangement. It cannot be reversed.
What are examples of physical changes that I can think of?
- Cutting paper
- Breaking wood
- Melting butter
- Cracking an egg
- Salt dissolving in water
- Slicing open an apple
What are examples of chemical changes that I can think of?
- Iron rusting (oxidation)
- Toast burning
- Digesting food
- Nitroglycerin exploding
- Frying an egg
Is color change a physical or chemical change?
Both.
True or false: Ductility is a chemical property.
False
