PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGE Flashcards
Properties are determined by changing the identity of the substance?
Chemical Properties
Substance Reacts to the presence of:
Air
Acid
Base
Water
Other Chemical
Determined without changing the identity of the substance
Physical Properties ( two types Intensive and Extensive)
Does not depend on the amount of substance
Intensive Physical Property
Color
Melting Point
Boiling Point
Density
Depends on the amount of substance
Extensive Physical Property
Mass
Volume Length
Shape
Can be measured or observed without changing the identity and composition of the substance. Describes the physical characteristics of the substance.
Physical Properties (color, odor, taste, state of matter, density, melting point, boiling point, mass, volume, malleability( to be molded), solubility( to dissolve) and hardness)
How to determine Physical Properties
Using the five senses
A description of a object
Malleability
Ability to be pounded into thin sheets
Ex. Aluminum can be rolled or pounded into sheets to make foil.
Ductility
Ability to be drawn or pulled into a wire
Ex. Copper in wiring soldering wires or joints
Are determined by a substance’s ability to with other substances, React
Chemical Properties
Chemical Properties ( Flammable, Radioactive, Oxidizer, Corrosive, Combustible, Toxic , Explosive and Pyrophoric)
Describes how that substance’s chemical composition will change given a specific set of conditions.
How it will change or react to other substances.
Chemical Properties
Change in substance that involves a change in the identity or chemical make up of that substance.
Chemical Changes( fermentation(sugar to alcohol), oxidation(iron nail - rusty nail), combustion(logs to burning logs). electrolysis(water to H2 and 02 gases)
All chemical changes are accompanies by a
Physical Change
Ability to react with air
Rust, Tarnish, Corrode, Rot
Ability to catch fire
Flammability
