Administrative region
Areas controlled by local or central government agencies
Breac/partial Gaeltacht
Areas of the Gaeltacht where 25-79% of people speak Irish on a daily basis
Climatic regions
Areas of the world that experience a particular climate eg. desert regions
Commune
The oldest and smallest type of administrative region in France. They are local authorities responsible for public services in small towns and villages
Départment
A French administrative region similar in size to Irish counties. Responsible for planning, public housing, roads and schools and health services. They are all similar in size and shape
Depressions
Weather systems with low atmospheric pressure at their centre around which air circulates rapidly in an anticlockwise (northern hemisphere) direction. Depressions or Lows are associated with changeable, cloudy, windy and rainy weather
Fíor/true gaeltacht
Areas of the Gaeltacht where over 80% of people speak Irish on a daily basis
Flanders
The northern half of Belgium where most people speak Flemish
Frontal rain
A type of rainfall that is formed at weather fronts
Geomorphic regions
Regions with a unique landscape based on their rock type, structure and relief e.g the North European Plain and the Burren, Clare
Human factors
Human factors are population, transport infrastructure, government and EU policy and market. These all affect the development of a region
Limon/loess
A fertile stoneless soil
Nodal/urban/city regions
A distinct region based on an urban city area e.g the Dublin city region
North Atlantic Drift
The warm sea current that travels north eastwards across the Atlantic Ocean towards Ireland and northern Europe
North European Plain
A low lying region covering more than half of Europe
Physical factors
Physical factors are climate, relief, soils and drainage. These affect the development of a region
Plantation
The organised settlement of English people onto Irish land during the 16th and 17th centuries
Polar
Cold air from the polar region that influences Ireland’s climate
Polar front
The junction of polar and tropical air masses at latitude 60 degrees North
Region
An area with a characteristic that sets it apart from other areas making it distinctive or unique in some way eg. the Burren, Clare
Région
A large French administrative region similar to an Irish province. Responsible for regional planning and economic development eg. Brittany
Regional assemblies
Large administrative regions in Ireland such as the North and Western
Regional Assembly
Responsible for managing EU funding and coordination of public services
Relief rainfall
A type of rainfall that forms over mountainous areas
Socio economic regions
Regions with distinct social and economic characteristics such as population density, industry and wealth
Tropical
Warm air from tropical regions that influences Ireland’s climate
Topography
Another name for relief or the shape of the land surface
Wallonia
The southern half of Belgium
