What is physical activity?
Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy (includes exercise)
How is physical activity measured?
Energy expended is a product of FITT:
- Frequency
- Intensity
- Time
- Type
What is the definition of exercise?
PA that is planned, structured, repetitive and purposeful (aimed at improving or maintaining one or more component of physical fitness)
What is physical fitness?
- A set of attributes that people have/achieve that relates to the ability to perform PA
- Influenced by genetics, health conditions, PA and exercise
What are the types of physical fitness?
- Cardio-respiratory endurance
- Muscular strength
- Balance & coordination
- Flexibility
What two independent risk factors for all cause mortality are just as important as smoking, hypertension and high cholesterol?
Low fitness & poor muscle strength
What is the simple cause of obesity?
Energy intake > energy expenditure
What are the minimum PA guidelines for children aged < 5 years (when walking)?
- 3 hours PA per day
- Babies: tummy time
What are the minimum PA guidelines for children aged 5-17 years?
- At least 1 hour PA per day (mod-vig intensity)
- Up to several hours
What are the minimum PA guidelines for adults aged 18-64 years?
- 30 mins mod intensity PA 5 days/week OR
- 75 mins vig intensity PA spread across the week (or a combination of both)
- Muscle strengthening 2 days per week
- Minimise sedentary behaviour
What are the minimum PA guidelines for adults aged >64 years?
- Being active for 30 mins per day
- Strengthening
- Balance & coordination
- Aims to reduce falls & increase independence
What is the difference between primary and secondary prevention?
- Primary: Before the person has a disease
- Secondary: Once the person has a disease, preventing incidents/other diseases/deterioration
What are the warning signs of heart attack?
- Pain in chest, arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, back
- SOB, nauseous, cold sweat, dizzy/light-headed
