Phys Bile Secretion and Gall Bladder Function Flashcards

1
Q

Describe resting condition of biliary system

A

sphincter of Oddi is closed. Bile flows from liver to gallbladder, which expands.

9
Q

2 primary bile acids & why is primary a thing?

A

Cholic acid
Chenodexoxycholic acid

Primary bile acids are synthesized by the liver & nowhere else.

12
Q

why is it important to make a salt or an acid?

A
salt = hydrophilic/amphiphilic so stays in lumen
acid = more hydrophobic, so reabsorbed

13
Q

How is bile salt synthesis regulated and by what enzyme?

A

bile salts returning in enterohepatic circulation are rate-limiting and inhibited by 7alpha-hydroxylase

16
Q

how are bile salts absorbed from blood?

A

coupled to NaKATPase. BA/Na+ symporter.

17
Q

How & where is hemoglobin broken down?

A

reticuloendothelial system. Then bilirubin is transported by albumin to liver.

In liver: bilirubin glucaronide (conjugated bilirubin) secreted into bile (yellow). In intestine bilirubin is unconjugated, converted to urobilinogen (by intestinal bacteria), then oxidized to urobilin and stercobilin (dark stool’s color)

18
Q

what gives urine a yellow/brown color?

A

urobilin (from urobilinogen of gut)

19
Q

gallbladder removes what from bile?

A

NaCl & water

20
Q

Most common type of gallstones

A

cholesterol stones, forms around nidus

21
Q

10-20% of gall stones

A
pigment stones (unconjugated bilirubin)
gall bladder wall often damaged by bacteria & bile saturated by conjugated bilirubin
22
Q

removal of gallbladder does what to bile plot?

A

levels it out - no high peak of bile to digest upon feeding
