phys and human geo + coordinates Flashcards
What are all the continents?
North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Antartica, Oceania.
What are all the oceans?
Atlantic, Pacific, Southern, Arctic, Indian
What are hemispheres?
the 4 portions of Earth, Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western
Example of Biosphere:
Plants, Trees, basically any life on Earth.
Example of Litho/Geosphere:
Landforms, hills, rocks
Note: Geosphere is on the Earth’s crust and mantle.
atmosphere example and caption
Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Troposphere, Exosphere, Thermosphere.
TrSMThE
Note: Atmosphere is a variety of gases enveloping a planetary body. Gaseous layer, like a blanket of air, that surrounds the earth. We breathe this air.
What is the difference between rotation and revolution?
Rotation is the movement about the Earth’s axis. Revolution is the movement of the Earth revolving around the Sun.
Note: The axis of the Earth is tilted at a 23.5 degree angle.
Why do we have seasons?
We have seasons due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. When northern hemisphere is leaning towards the Sun, northern hemisphere has summer while southern hemisphere has winter.
What is zero degrees?
Equator and Prime Meridian
what does it mean when the sun rays travel a short distance?
Which ever hemisphere is closer to the sun the sun rays will travel a shorter distance and rays will be felt stronger, this indicates that it is summer.
How many timezones are there?
24, if by hour. If you consider the timezones in between 30 min to 45 min then there are 38 timezones.
What is latitude?
Latitude measures the distance north or south of the equator. Latitude lines start at the equator (0 degrees latitude) and run east and west, parallel to the equator
what is Longitude?
Longitude measures distance east or west of the prime meridian. Lines of longitude, also called meridians, are imaginary lines that divide the Earth. Run north to south. Paralell to the equator
what is the difference between human geo and phys geo?
Physical Geography covers natural attributes and its processes.
Human Geography covershow human activity influences or is influenced by Earth.
