Phylum Platyhelminthes Flashcards
Phylum Platyhelminthes
The phylum of flatworms
Acoelomate
Without a body cavity
Auricles
The portion of the external ear not connected within the head. Also used to designate an atrium of a heart.
Cephalization
The development of a head with an accumulation of nervous tissue into a brain.
Definitive Host
An organism that supports the adult or sexually reproductive form of a parasite.
Flame Cells
They pump water and ammonia through the protonephridia. (NO HEAT OR FIRE)
Ganglia
Found in peripheral nerves; regions of gray matter made up of unmyelinated fibers.
Intermediate Host
An organism that supports the immature or nonproductive forms of a parasite.
Monoecious
An organism in which both male and female sex organs occur in the same individual
Nephridipore
Release water and ammonia from the protonephridia
Ocelli
A simple eye or eyespot in many invertebrates. A small cluster of photoreceptors.
Parenchyma
Cellular tissue lying between the body wall and the organs of invertebrate animals lacking a coelom, such as flatworms.
Proglottid
Each segment in the strabila of a tapeworm, containing a complete sexually mature reproductive system.
Protonephridia
Removes water and ammonia from the tissues.
Scolex
The anterior end of a tapeworm, bearing suckers and hooks for attachment.
Strobila
The segmented part of the body of a tapeworm that consists of a long chain of proglottids.
Triploblastic
Having a body derived from three embryonic layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm), as in all multicellular animals except sponges and coelenterates.
Pharynx
The continuous space behind the nose and the mouth that leads down both to the passage for food and to the passage for air.
Incomplete Digestive System
Consists of a digestive cavity with one opening. The single opening serves as both the mouth and the anus.
