Phylum Annelida Flashcards
Phylum Annelida
The phylum that includes earthworms, leeches, and polychetes.
Aortic Arches
Six pairs of arteries in vertebrate embryos, which connect the ventral aorta to the dorsal aorta by running between the gill slits.
Clitellum
A raised band encircling the body of worms and some leeches, made up of reproductive segments.
Crop
A pouch-like part of the alimentary tract of some animals, especially of birds, where food is partially digested and stored for regurgitation to nestlings.
Gizzard
A thick-walled, muscular pouch in the lower stomach of many birds and reptiles that grinds food, often with the aid of ingested stones or grit.
Metamerism
The condition of being constructed of a linear series of repeating parts, each being a metamere (body segment) and each being formed in sequence in the embryo, from anterior to posterior.
Prostomium
The first body segment in an annelid worm’s body in the anterior end. It is in front of (but does not include) the mouth.
Septa
A wall, dividing a cavity or structure into smaller ones.
Setae
A stiff hair, bristle, or bristle - like process or part on an organism. On the bodies of many polychaete worms, such as earthworms, are used for locomotion.
