Phylum Mollusca Flashcards
Pro or Deut?
Protostome
Layers
triploblastic: coelomate (space btn gut & body wall derived from mesoderm)
Digestion
complete digestive tract
Respiration
gills – specialized respiratory structure
purpose: increase surface area for diffusion of gases
Excretion
nephridia: structures excretory
skeleton
hydrostatic skeleton
Symmetry
bilateral symmetry w/ cephalization
Level of Organization
organ system level of organization
Nervous System
ganglia + nerve network
What kind of circulatory system?
- open circulatory system
- means that they lack capillaries so blood just oozes out of top of organ
- exchange btn organs & blood takes place in hemocoel
- → slow blood flow
2 Body Regions
- head-foot: responsible for sensory & locomotion
- visceral mass – where everything else takes place: reproduction, digestion, circulation, excretion
Shell
- _ calcareous shell_ (not all have them)
- secreted by mantle
Layers of Calcareous Shell
- periostracum
outermost layer, made of protein
Layers of Calcareous Shell
- prismatic layer
middle layer, made of organic molecules & calcium carbonate, glossy sheen
Layers of Calcareous Shell
- Nacreous Layer
innermost layer, calcium carbonate alternating w/ organic
