Phylum Arthropoda Flashcards
What does “arthropoda” mean?
“jointed legs”
What is interesting about them?
has more kinds species than any other phylum
Pro or Deu
protostome
Skin Layers
triploblastic: coelomate
Digestive Tract
complete digestive tracts
What kind of feeders are they?
- suspension feeders (e.g. barnacles), predators (spiders), herbivores (eat plants, fungi) and fluid feeders (butterfly)
What parts do they use for circulatory system?
gills (aquatic), tracheae (terrestrial): circulatory system for gases → oxygen delivered directly to body parts
Excretion
- use antennal glands
- terrestrial: malpighian tubules, coxal glands
Skeleton Structure
exoskeleton – skeleton on outside of body, not covered by living tissue
Layers of Exoskeleton:
Epicuticle
waxy (hydrophobic so acts as water proofing), outside is not getting wet from inside
Layers of Exoskeleton:
Procuticle
What is it and what does it allow?
- rigid, crunchy part of skeleton
- allows flexible areas of skeleton (e.g. joints)
- allows physical protection
- allows support (leverage – can push against ground effectively)
How do they shed exoskeleton?
Through a process called ecdysis.
Symmetry?
bilateral symmetry w/ cephalization
Level of Organization
organ systems
Nervous System
ganglia + ventral nerve cord
What kind of circulatory system do they have?
open circulatory system (no capillaries) + heart
Do they have tagmatization?
Yes.
What is special about their appendages?
- paired, jointed appendages
Types of Metamorphosis:
- Hemimetabolous
- young resemble adults
- feeds in all stages
- changes are gradual
- series instars (simple stage of life) that indicates age of animal
Types of Metamorphosis:
_ Holometabolous_
- young don’t resemble adults
- doesn’t feed as a pupa
- change is drastic
- adult can move but young can’t → resource partitioning
