Phylum Chordata Flashcards
Symmetry;
Bilateral
Support;
An endoskeleton consisting of an internal jointed system of calcified
bones to which muscles for locomotion attach externally.
There is a spinal column with segmented muscle blocks.
Coelom;
Extensively developed with complex organs organised into complex systems e.g. digestive, circulatory, excretory
Segmentation;
Segmentation is more subtle in chordates.
There is a spinal column with segmented muscle blocks.
Gut/feeding;
Chordates have a one way gut with a separate
mouth and anus, ingested and undigested food
do not mix.
There is regional specialisation, mouth,
oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, colon,
rectum, anus.
All digestion is entirely extracellular in the
gut cavity.
In non-vertebrate chordates there is a stiff dorsal rod (notochord) instead of a true backbone.
