Q

What is the Peristome?

A

Is a ring of teeth found at the top of the sporophyte capsule. It is hydroscopic and aids in spore dispersal.

Q

What is a protonema?

A

Q

5 Differences between Mosses and Liverworts.

A
  1. Leafy liverworts have no midrib, most mosses have.
  2. Mosses have multicellular rhizoids and liverworts have unicellular rhizoids.
  3. Moss leaves are equal sized and spirally arranged, Liverworts leaves are arranged in one plane on either side of the stem.
  4. Moss leaves are never lobed.
  5. Liverworts have oil bodies in leaves, absent in mosses.

13
Q

How is class Spagnopsida distinguished?

A

They are distinguished by their leaves, they are once cell thick.
- Possess two types of cells:
1. Photosynthetic cells-possess chloroplasts and form a network arrangement.
2. Hyaline- colorless cells that are dead at maturity. hold water & avoids desiccation of plant

16
Q

Habitat of Sphagnum

A
  • Swamps
  • Moist habitats
  • Along banks of lakes
17
Q

Sphagnum Morphology

A
  • Gametophytes bear multicellular rhizoids with oblique septa.
  • differentiated into an upright branched axis & leaves
  • Many branches of limited growth are densely crowded forming a compact head (coma).
18
Q

What does the gametophyte develop fro?

A

develops from a bud and into a protonema

18
Q

What are the 3 distinct differentiations of tissues in the stem of sphagnum?

A
  1. Outer cortex (Hyalodermis)
  2. Middle Hadrom (Prosenchymatous region
  3. Central cylinder/medulla
18
Q

Pseudopodium

A

Elongated arhcegonial branch at the base of sporophyte
