Phylum Bryophyta Flashcards
What type of rhizoids do they produce?
multicellular or unicellular
Multicellular
Presence of stomata sporophytes
Yes or No
Dioecious or Monoecious?
Dioecious
separate male and female gametophytes
Morphology of plant
Unbranched sporophyte with a single terminal sporangium known as capsule borne on an elongated stalk called a seta.
What is the calyptra?
The calyptra is a gametophytic tissue that covers the capsule.
What is the Operculum?
The lid of the sporophyte capsule
What is the Peristome?
Is a ring of teeth found at the top of the sporophyte capsule. It is hydroscopic and aids in spore dispersal.
What is a protonema?
It is a branched, threadlike structure that grows from a spore and eventually develops into the moss plant.
What are the primitive conducting cells of mosses?
names of their water conducting cells and food conducting cells
Hydriods- water conducting cells
Leptoids- sap conducting cells
5 Differences between Mosses and Liverworts.
- Leafy liverworts have no midrib, most mosses have.
- Mosses have multicellular rhizoids and liverworts have unicellular rhizoids.
- Moss leaves are equal sized and spirally arranged, Liverworts leaves are arranged in one plane on either side of the stem.
- Moss leaves are never lobed.
- Liverworts have oil bodies in leaves, absent in mosses.
4 Major classes of Bryophyta
- Sphagnopsida
- Andreaeopsida
- Polytricopsida
- Bryopsida
Example of Class Spagnopsida.
Peat moss- used in horticulture
How is class Spagnopsida distinguished?
They are distinguished by their leaves, they are once cell thick.
- Possess two types of cells:
1. Photosynthetic cells-possess chloroplasts and form a network arrangement.
2. Hyaline- colorless cells that are dead at maturity. hold water & avoids desiccation of plant
What is a costa?
Moss version of a midrib.
What is Sphagnum commonly known as?
Bog moss or Peat moss
