Phylogeny Flashcards
Concept 4
Taxonomy
field of biology that classifies organisms
3 Domains of Life
Eubacteria: prokaryotes- bacteria like pathogens
Archaebacteria: prokaryotes in extreme environments
Eukarya: eukaryotes
Domains are further subdivided into
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
-binomial nomenclature: “Genus species”
Phylogeny
evolutionary history of a species
-3.5 BYA- 1st prokaryote
2.1 BYA- 1st eukaryote through Endosymbiosis (1 prokaryote in another and they thrived)
Endosymbiotic Theory
suggests that over time, coevolution of the 2 prokaryotes happened + led to speciation of the first eukaryotes
-believed that all organisms share a common ancestor
Phylogenetic Trees
diagram used to predict evolutionary relationships
-Hypothesis based on: Shared morphology, genes, and behaviors
Maximum Parsinomy
use the simplest explanation for creating the tree
