Patterns of Evolution Flashcards
Concept 2
Speciation
the creation of a new species by evolution from a pre-existing species
-Isolation must occur
-gene pools change
Extinction
elimination of a species
Gradual Extinction
occurs slowly
-ex. climate change
Mass extinction
occurs when a catastrophic event changes the environment suddenly
Gradualism
slow, constant changes over a long period of time in species
-ex. peppered moths
Punctuated Equilibrium
bursts of change followed by periods of stability
Divergent Evolution
-different species come from one common ancestor
-new environments caused the differences
-Adaptive Radiation: divergent evolution on a small scale
Convergent Evolution
unrelated species get similar traits because they live in similar environments
Coevolution
populations form a special relationship and change in response to each other
