- American spirit of territorial expansion, 1815-1860 (expanded to the Pacific Ocean)
- Assumes America’s special experiment in freedom and democracy, enhances America’s divine mission (given by Providence) to spread democratic institutions.
- Coined by John O’Sullivan in 1845
Who was John O’Sullivan?
- Coined the term Manifest Destiny in 1845
- An influential journalist and proponent of Jacksonian democracy
- Believed in the right to claim The Oregon Territory as the America’s great experiment of liberty and federated self-government
