Q

What is glucose?

A

Glucose is a simple sugar. Glucose is a stable way for chemical energy to be stored. (Also known as a carbohydrate) When the energy in glucose needs to be used, the chemical ATP is formed.

Q

What is ATP?

A

ATP (adenosine triphosophate) has three phosphate groups, the energy is stored in the last phosphate group.

Q

Why do organisms need both ATP and glucose?

A

Glucose is the way energy is stored, and when it is broken down, the energy released is used to form ATP- which is used as fuel by the cell. They are molecules we can store energy in.

16
Q

Stroma

A

the fluid-filled space outside of all the grana in the chloroplast

  • stroma is like the cytoplasm of the chloroplast
  • the site of the light- independent reaction (calvin cycle) of photosynthesis
17
Q

Photosynthesis Chemical Formula

A

6CO2 + 6H20 + sunglight—-602 + C6H12O6

*all 2’s are small and so is the 6 in the last section

18
Q

How do plants benefit from photosynthesis?

A

They make food for themselves for energy

19
Q

How do humans benefit from photosynthesis

A

They receive oxygen to breathe they have a food source, the atmosphere is cleared of carbon dioxide

20
Q

*pigments capture the solar energy

A

jlk;l

21
Q

*Solar energy is converted into chemical energy (light-dependent reaction)

A

lj;j

22
Q

*Chemical energy is used to make glucose (sugar) (light dependent reaction or the Calvin Cycle

A

jhlhl

23
Q

Where does the light-dependent reaction take place?

A

the thylakoid

24
Q

Light dependent reaction

A

produces oxygen gas and converts ADP—– ATP and NADP+——NADPH

25
Q

What are ATP and NADPH

A

molecule that store and release energy

analogy: fully charged batteries, charged by sunlight

26
Q

What is used in the light dependent reaction? and what is made?

A

used: sunlight, water, ADP, NADPH
made: O2 gas, ATP and NADPH

27
Q

Where does the Calvin Cycle take place?

A

take place in the stroma (fluid) portion of the chloroplast and uses ATP and NADPH from the light reaction to convert CO2 to sugars

28
Q

Why is the Calvin Cycle also called the light-independent reaction

A

Because it is not dependent on sunlight to power it (ATP and NADPH are the power source for this reaction)

29
Q

Why is the calvin cycle considered a cycle? what allows it to continue?

A

it is considered a cycle because it is used several times around. Carbon dioxide is used.

30
Q

*sunlight shines down onto the planet as white light, which contains all wavelengths (colors) of light. Plants are only able to capture some of these wavelengths, mainly light in the purple/ blue and red/orange range. This light is absorbed and used for energy.

A
