DNA replication Flashcards
What is DNA replication?
making an exact copy of a DNA molecule
What are the three steps?
1- unwind
2-unzip
3-reproduce
How does DNA copy?
DNA always copies 5’ to 3’
How fast does DNA replication happen?
replication happens 2,000 bp/sec
What happens during unwinding?
DNA unwinds to its loosest form
What happens during unzipping?
the two strands come apart at the base pairs (breaking hydrogen bonds)
What happens during reproducing?
the exposed bases on each strand bond with free nucleotides in the nucleus according to the base pairing rules
DNA replication enzymes
helicase and plymerase
Helicase
unwinds and unzips the DNA molecule (breaks hydrogen bonds between the base pairs) to expose the bases on each strand
DNA plymerase
allows free nucleotides (A, T, C, G) to bond to the exposed bases on each strand according to the base pairing rules
