Photosynthesis and respiration Flashcards
When and where does photosynthesis occur?
Photosynthesis takes place inside plant cells in small things called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll. This absorbs the light energy needed to make photosynthesis happen. Plants can only photosynthesise in the light.
Reactants of photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide and water and sunlight
Products of photosynthesis
Glucose and oxygen
Word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water —sunlight and chlorophyll— glucose + oxygen
Chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO,2 + 6H,2O —- C,6H,12O,6 + 6O,2
5 Difference between respiration and photosynthesis
Photosynthesis produces sugar and respiration burns it for energy
Photosynthesis stores energy respiration releases energy
Photosynthesis releases oxygen respiration use it
Uses carbon dioxide, produces carbon dioxide
Requires light to work, occurs in dark and light
Define photosynthesis
The process which some green plants use carbon dioxide as energy to produce oxygen.
Define aerobic respiration
A type of respiration in which oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide and water are produced.
Define anaerobic respiration
The type of respiration that does not use oxygen. It happens when there is no oxygen or it is scarce
Equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen —- carbon dioxide + water + energy
Equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose – lactic acid + energy
Which part of a cell does respiration take place
In the mitochondria. It is the power house for the cell as it is the site for cellular respiration
What are stomata and how are they involved in photosynthesis
They make food from carbon dioxide and water in the process of photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is taken from the air using stomata and oxygen is released as a waste.
What is the role of palisade
Absorb light used by the leaf
