Photosynthesis and Respiration Flashcards
What is the form of energy that powers cellular work?
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) releases energy when bonds between the phosphates are broken
How are ATP and ADP different
ATP stores energy and has 3 phosphate groups while ADP releases energy for the cells to use and has 2 phosphate groups
Which process is ATP formed
Cellular respiration
Why do we need ATP
ATP is the energy our cells use to run all of its activities
How is the energy released from ATP
When the third phosphate is broken off then the energy is released
What are heterotrophs
organisms that cannot make their own food and must eat to get energy
Once an organism has its organic molecules either from photosynthesis or eating how does it regenerate ATP
Cellular Respiration
What is cellular respiration
Cellular respiration releases the energy in food to make ATP- energy our cells can use
Cellular Respiration equation
C6H12O6+6O2=6CO2+6H2O+36 ATP`
Photosynthesis equation
6H20+6CO2=C6H12O6+6O2
Where does cellular respiration take place?
The mitochondria
Glycolysis
The splitting of glucose into two pyruvates, step 1, occurs in the cytoplasm
What is Aerobic respiration
in the presence of oxygen
1. glycolysis
2. Krebs cycle
3. ETC (electron transport chain)
Krebs cycle
- pyruvate enters the mitochondria
- Krebs cycle produces CO2 and ATP
Electron Transport Chain
Occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane, produces ATP and H2O, 32 net ATP produced
Anaerobic respiration
without oxygen (aka fermentation), occurs in the cytoplasm
Anaerobic respiration process
If the cell does not have any oxygen gas, it
will go through Glycolysis (but skip Kreb’s Cycle & Electron Transport Chain).
Fermentation
releases energy from food-producing ATP without using oxygen
Which is more efficient aerobic or anaerobic
aerobic is more efficient becuase anaerobic respiration produces less ATP
Alcohol fermentation
Produces ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide, occurs in yeast and other microorganisms
