Photosynthesis and Plants Flashcards
What is Photosynthesis
The process where plants make the food glucose. from carbon dioxide and water. It uses the energy in sunlight trapped by the green pigment chlorophyll which is found in structures called chloroplasts
Carbon dioxide enters via pores in leaf called
Stomata
Oxygen produced diffuses out of the _____ if not required for _________
Stomata
Respiration
Water enters the leave in tissue in veins. Water is then absorbed by special cells called
Root hair cells
Word equation for Photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide + water –light–> glucose + oxygen
Chlorophyll is located where
In chloroplasts
Difference in exothermic and endothermic
Exothermic reaction release energy to surroundings whereas endothermic take in energy from surroundings
For photosynthesis to occur what must take place
For photosynthesis to occur, light energy must be absorbed by chlorophyll. In the chloroplasts
Is photosynthesis exothermic or endothermic
endothermic as it absorbs light energy
How do you destarch a plant
Leave it in the dark for 2 days (24 - 48 hours)
What is a variegated plant
A plant who’s leaves are not fully green
Testing a leaf for starch steps
Place leaf in boiling water - kills the leaf and stops all chemical reactions
Boil in ethanol - Removes chlorophyll from the leaf so we can see colour changes
Dip in boiling water - washes off ethanol, and softens leaf so we can spread it
Add Iodine - test for the presence of starch - yellow brown - blue black
Safety precautions to take when working with ethanol
Ethanol is highly flammable so never use a flame to heat, boil using a water bath and wear safety gloves
Is light required for photosynthesis steps
Destarch plant
Cover part of leaf with light proof paper or foil and leave under bright light
Remove covering and test for starch
Is carbon dioxide required for Photosynthesis steps
Destarch two plants
place one in a transparent bag that absorbs CO2 and the other in a bag with a container of water
Seal bags and leave plants under light
Test a leaf from each plant for starch
