Photosynthesis and Leaf Structure Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
the process in which plants use carbon dioxide and water to synthesise glucose, using energy from the Sun
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water -(via light and chlorophyll)-> glucose + oxygen
What is chlorophyll?
Green pigment found in chloroplasts, which are an organelle of a plant cell.
What is chlorophyll’s function?
It is responsible for absorbing light energy into chemical energy to be used for photosynthesis.
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 –> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What are the different carbohydrates formed from glucose from photosynthesis?
starch, cellulose, sucrose, nectar
What is starch used for?
energy storage
What is cellulose used for?
building cell walls
What is glucose used for?
in respiration as an energy provider
What is sucrose used for?
transport in phloem vessels
What is nectar used for?
to be attractive to insects who pollinate
Why are nitrate ions important for a plant?
creating amino acids, the building blocks of protein
Why are magnesium ions important for a plant?
creating chlorophyll
What is the effect of light intensity on photosynthesis?
As it increases, so does the rate of photosynthesis, until it reaches a plateau due to lack of chlorophyll
What is the effect of carbon dioxide on photosynthesis?
As it increases, so does the rate of photosynthesis, until it reaches a plateau due to lack of chlorophyll
