Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
series of enzyme controlled reactions that allows green plants to make their own food using light energy from the sun.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
chlorophyll
Carbon dioxide+water+light energy——> glucose+oxygen
What are carbon dioxide and water known as in photosynthesis?
raw materials
How do green plant receive light energy?
chlorophyll absorbs/traps light energy from the sun
What is glucose considered as ?
a useful product
What is oxygen considered as?
a waste product
What can be used to test for starch?
Iodine solution turns blue/black
How many stages are there to carry out photosynthesis?
2
What is stage 1 called?
light reaction/photolysis(of water)
Where does photolysis take place?
In the chloroplast
What happens to the water at photolysis?
water is split to produce hydrogen and oxygen.
Where does the hydrogen go after photolysis?
second stage
What happens to the oxygen after photolysis?
released as a by-product
What is generated also during photolysis?
ATP (Light energy converted to chemical energy in the form of ATP)
How is oxygen released as a by-product?
by diffusion
How does hydrogen travel to stage 2?
via a hydrogen carrier molecule
What is stage 2 known as?
Carbon fixation
Where does carbon fixation take place?
in the chloroplast
How is carbon fixation controlled?
enzyme controlled reaction
What is used to help make glucose?
hydrogen and ATP from photolysis and carbon dioxide
What is a limiting factor ?
a factor which if in short supply limits or holds up the process f photosynthesis
What are the 3 main limiting factors?
light intensity
carbon dioxide concentration
temperature
What is the need for supplementary lighting in horticulture?
In winter there is little light in early morning and evening
What is the need for carbon dioxide enrichment in horticulture?
provides crop with optimum CO2 concentration
What is the need for heating in horticulture?
provides crops with optimum temperature
