Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Plants and some bacteria use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (sugar) and oxygen
Why do plants do photosynthesis?
To make their own food
What is chloroplast?
A plant cell organelle responsible for photosynthesis, (the process where light energy is converted into chemical energy.)
What is chlorophyll?
Green pigment found in plants
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water —>(light) —> glucose + oxygen
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO^2 + 6H^2O —>(light)—> C^6, H^12, O^6 + 6O^2
How do you show a plant photosynthesising?
When its giving of oxygen gas as a by product
What are the 6 leaf adaptations to be more succesful for photosynthesis?
1.Large surface area for more light to fall on
2.Thin leaves so diffusion is short
3. Contain chlorophyll in the chloroplast to absorb light
4.Veins which bring water to cells through xylem and phloem to remove products of photosynthesis
5. Air spaces that allow carbon dioxide to get to the cells and oxygen to leave by diffusion
6.Guard cells that open and close stomata to regualte gas exchange
Why is photosynthesis an endothermic reaction?
It needs input of energy from the enviroment
How are algae adapted for photosynthesis?
- They are aquatic so they can do it in water
- Large surface area
- Absorb carbon dioxide in the water around them
- The oxygen they produce aso dissolves in water around them as it is released
