photosynthesis Flashcards
what happens in the light dependent stage and where does it happen
light energy converted into chemical energy in the thylakoid membrane
what is photolysis
light induced splitting of water into H+, e- and oxygen
what are the proton and electrons produced by photolysis used for
electron replaces those lost from chlorophyll
proton used to reduce NADH
what is photo-ionisation
chlorophyll absorbs light, exciting a pair of electrons
what happens in the electron transport chain
excited electrons passed along via series of redox reactions, releasing energy
what is the energy produced by the ECT used for
the energy is used to pump protons through membrane into thylakoid lumen to create concentration gradient
what is chemiosmosis
protons diffuse down a concentration gradient into stroma through ATP synthase joining Pi with ADP and reducing NADP
what happens in the calvin cycle and where does it happen
chemical energy converted into organic molecules in the stroma
what is carbon fixation
CO2 added to RuBP (ribulose bisphosphate) to from 2 x glycerate 3 phosphate
catalysed by rubisco
what happens to the glycerate 3 phosphate
reduced using energy in the form of ATP and hydrogen from NADPH to from triose phosphate
what happens to the triose phosphate
1/6 converted into carbohydrates
5/6 used to regenerate RuBP
what factors affect the rate of photosynthesis
light intensity
carbin dioxide conc
temperature
