photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis input & output
Input: 6H2O + 6CO2
Output: C6H12O6 + 6O2
what energy source is required for photosynthesis?
sunlight
Autotrophs
Use CO2 as energy source
Phototrophs….examples?
Use sunlight as an energy source
ex: Plants, some bacteria, many protists
Heterotrophs
Get energy and carbon from eating autotrophs and other heterotrophs
What is photosynthesis?
A energy storing pathway that requires carbon
What is photosynthesis’s main roles?
Providing energy molecules, turning inorganic carbon organic, and producing oxygen
Producer
Makes its own energy
Consumer
Takes energy from others
Decomposer
Breaks down waste
2 steps to photosynthesis
Light reaction (ps II) then Dark reactions (Calvin Cycle) (ps I)
Light reactions
In thalakoid membrane, Pigments absorb light energy, energy splits H2O, NADP+ is reduced to NADPH, O2 and ATP is produce
Calvin Cycle
A biosynthetic pathway in the stroma using ATP to convert CO2 into organic compounds that make C6H12O6 ( takes 3 cycles to make one glucose ) , reduces NADPH to NADP+
What does burning fossil fuel do?
Releases stored carbon (CO2) in atmosphere disturbing natural carbon cycle & leads to more photosynthesis and higher acidity in ocean
