Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
Aerobic respiration
energy releasing pathway that breaks down glucose and uses oxygen as ATP
what is the input and output?
input : glucose and 6 oxygen
output : 6 carbon dioxide and 6 water molecules + ATP
2 energy releasing pathways
Anaerobic releasing pathway ( starts & ends in cytoplasm) & Aerobic Resperarion (starts in cytoplasm ; ends in mitochondria)
Importan parts of mitochondria
Cristae = folds of inner membrane
Matrix= inner core of mitochondria
Glucose
C6H12O6 held by covalent bonds
3 stages of aerobic respiration
1.) Glycolysis
2.) Krebs Cycle
3.) Oxidative phosphorylation
Glycolysis
In cytoplasm, 2 part;
1st, energy requiring; ATO activates glucose and its carbon
2nd, energy releasing; turns glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvate, netting (forming) 2 ATP & 2 NADH
Second stage
Preparatory reactions & Krebs cycle occurring in matrix
Preparatory reactions
Pyruvate (3 carbon) is oxidized into two carbon acetyl-CoA and CO2
NAD+ is reduced
Krebs Cycle
acetyl units are oxidized to CO2
NAD+ and FAD are reduced
