Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to do work
What is energy measured in?
Joules
State the conservation of energy theory
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
it can only be transferred from 1 energy store to another
What is the ultimate source of energy?
The sun
What is meant by an autotroph?
Organisms that are capable of transferring energy on their own
What are the 2 types of energy producers / autotrophs?
- Photosynthetic autotrophs
- chemosynthetic autotrophs
Examples of photosynthetic autotrophs ?
- plants
- algae
- some bacteria
What do photosynthetic autotrophs do ?
- convert light energy into chemical energy
What do chemosynthetic autotrophs do ?
- these transfer energy from chemicals such as sulfur or ammonia
What is an example of chemosynthetic autotrophs?
Mostly Bacteria
What are all other organisms considered to be?
- Consumers
Or - heterotrophs
Why do we call all other organisms heterotrophs ?
- Because they have to transfer their energy from other living things.
