nitrogen cycle Flashcards
why is the nitrogen cycle important ?
- because the air is 78% nitrogen
- but plants and animals cannot obtain nitrogen through gas exchange
what is the structure of nitrogen gas
(n2) ?
- contains a triple bond between the nitrogen atoms
what is the role of microorganisms in the nitrogen cycle ?
- mircroorganisms are needed to convert nitrogen gas into nitrogen containing substances that plants and animals can absorb
what is unique about the triple bond ?
- the triple bond is extremely strong
- so it is difficult to break the bond and causes nitrogen to be an inert gas
how will plants and animals absorb the nitrogen containing substances ?
plants= active transport through the roots
animals = digestion and absorption of plant material
which biological molecules contain nitrogen ?
- proteins and amino acids
- ATP (adenine is a nitrogenous base)
- nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)
what are the 4 key processes in the nitrogen cycle ?
- ammonification
- nitrification
- nitrogen fixation
- denitrification
the nitrogen cycle does not work without… ?
- saprobiotic nutrition and microbes
where does nitrogen fixation occur ?
- in the soil
- wither in the naturally occurring fixating bacteria
- or the fixating bacteria in the nodules (legume) on roots of plants
where does ammonification occur ?
by decomposers in the soil
which process in the nitrogen cycle is not wanted in agriculture ?
- denitrification
- because ypur losing nitrogen and nitrogen containing compounds from the soil
when will denitrification occur and why ?
- when there is not enough oxygen in the soil
- ## because the denitrifying bacteria respire anaerobically
when can denitrification occur ?
- when there is low oxygen conc in the soil
- so when the soil is water clogged
- the oxygen has been displaced by water
what do farmers do to maintain a high oxygen conc in the soil ?
- they plough the soil
what kind of reaction is
ammonia –> nitrites —-> nitrates ? and why ?
-oxidation
- the nitrifying bacteria are aerobic bacteria so will only work in the presence of oxygen
what is the nitrogen containing compound in animal waste products ?
- urea in urine
what is the nitrogen containing compound in dead plant matter ?
- protein in dead plant matter
what happens in nitrogen fixation ?
- nitrogen gas is converted into nitrogen containing compounds
what kind of relationship is there between nitrogen fixing bacteria and the legumes? and why ?
- a symbiotic relationship
- because the bacteria get carbohydrates from the plants and the plants get amino acids from the bacteria
what kind of decomposers convert animal and plant waste product and dead matter into ammonia ?
- saprobionts
how can nitrates be absorbed into the plant ?
- by root hair cells through active transport
