Photosynthesis Flashcards
What part of the chloroplasts absorb the Sun’s light energy?
Chlorophyll
What are the only things photosynthesis can be carried out by?
Green plants and algae
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water (+light energy) —-> glucose + oxygen
What is the process for photosynthesis?
1) Carbon dioxide is taken in by the leaves, and water is taken up by the roots
2) The chlorophyll traps the light energy needed for photosynthesis
3) This energy is used to convert the carbon dioxide and water into glucose (a sugar)
What is oxygen released as of photosynthesis?
A by-product
What is some of the glucose converted into for storage?
Insoluble starch
What is the iodine test for starch?
By testing leaves with iodine solution we can identify the starch in the leaf and show that photosynthesis has occurred.
During photosynthesis light energy is transferred to what kind of energy?
Chemical
