Photosynthesis Flashcards
What happens in the first stage of photosynthesis
Light energy is absorbed by a pigment and creates high energy electrons, electrons go through electron transport chain and release energy to generate ATP by ATP synthase, energy used to split water (photolysis), hydrogen ions transferred to NADP to make NADPH for second stage
What is the first stage called
Photolysis
What is the second stage called
Carbon fixation (Calvin cycle)
What happens in the second stage of photosynthesis
CO2 enters the cycle and attaches to RuBP (reaction controlled by RuBisCo), Cu2+RuBP to make 3PG, 3PG is phosphorylated by ATP and combines with hydrogen ions from NADPH which produced G3P, some G3P is then used to regenerate RuBP and the remainder is used to synthesise glucose.
What is RuBP
Ribulose bisphosphate
What is 3PG
3-phosphoglycerate
What is G3P
Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate
What are the uses of Glucose
Respiration, starch (storage carbohydrate), cellulose (structural carbohydrate), biosynthesis pathways
What are the biosynthesis pathways
DNA, protein, fat
