What are the 5 freedoms for animal welfare
1.Freedom from hunger and thirst
2.Freedom from discomfort
3.Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4.Freedom to behave normally
5.Freedom from fear and distress
Costs and benefits of the 5 freedoms
Money has to be spent but them being relaxed results in better growth, successful breeding and high quality products
Indicators of poor welfare
The animals show behaviour patterns that they would not normally do
What is stereotypy
Repetitive movement (e.g pacing in zoos, rocking in mammals and chewing without food present)
What is failure in sexual or parental behaviour
Natural pattern of sexual behaviours either in terms of partners or timing or action does not happen
What is misdirected behaviour
A normal behavioural pattern that is directed at other animals or themselves e.g mutiliation from excessive licking or chewing of hair or feathers
What are levels of activity
Very low (apathy) or very high (hysteria) levels of activity
