Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis…
process that happens in the chloroplasts in the leaves of plants to make glucose (sugar)
chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and the energy causes carbon dioxide and water to react together, producing glucose and oxygen
Word equation for photosynthesis…
carbon dioxide + water ————-> glucose + oxygen
carbon dioxide and water makes glucose + oxygen through light energy which is absorbed by the chlorophyll in plants
the carbon dioxide is absorbed from the air by the leaf and water is absorbed from the soil by the roots and is transported to the leaves in the xylem vessels.
Where does photosynthesis take place…
chloroplasts in a plant cell
How are leaves adapted for photosynthesis…
adapted for photosynthesis by having a large surface area which means they are exposed to more light and can maximize light absorption
contain openings called stomata to allow carbon dioxide into the leaf and oxygen out
thin and flat so that carbon dioxide has a shorter distance to diffuse and the diffusion therefore occurs at a faster rate
Glucose…
type of sugar which is produced in photosynthesis and is used by the plant as food
(cells of plants and animals release energy from glucose by respiration.)
Starch
type of carbohydrate
glucose cannot be stored by the plant, so glucose is converted to starch, which can be stored for the plant to use later.
Iodine Solution…
used to test for starch, it is a yellow-brown colour but turns blue-black if there is starch.
Reactants…
what you start with in a chemical reaction, the react together
reactants in photosynthesis are carbon dioxide and water
Products…
what is made in a chemical reaction,
