Cells Flashcards
Cell…
The smallest functional unit that all living things are made of
Tissue…
A group of the same type of cells that work together to carry out a particular function
Organ…
A group of tissues that work together to carry out a particular function
Organ System…
A group of organs that work together to carry out a particular function
Animal cell
type of cells found in animals
Nucleus…
Contains the genetic material (DNA) – controls the activity of the cell. (animal/plant cells)
Cytoplasm…
A jelly-like substance that fills plant and animal cells. Where the chemical reactions happen. (animal/plant cells)
Mitochondria…
where energy is released from sugars by respiration. (animal/plant cells)
Cell membrane…
thin skin around the cell that holds it all together and controls what goes in and out (animal/plant cells)
Cell wall…
Made of a tough substance called cellulose which supports the cell – helps to keep it rigid/tough (plant cells only)
Vacuole…
Contains a liquid called cell sap - helps to keep the cell firm (plant cells only)
Chloroplasts…
Contains chlorophyll. Where photosynthesis happens. (plant cells only)
Chlorophyll…
green pigment found in the chloroplasts which absorbs sunlight, in which the plant needs to make sugars (food) (plant cells only)
how do substances pass in and out of cells?
diffusion, osmosis and active transport
diffusion is an essential process in cells
-cells need glucose and oxygen for respiration, which move into them by diffusion.
-respiration produces carbon dioxide and water which leave cells by diffusion.
Water actually leaves cells by osmosis, which is the diffusion of water across a membrane
