Photosynthesis Flashcards
What does the structure of the chloroplast contain, with functions? (6)
1 Stroma- contains enzymes for dark phase.
2 Lamella (Thylakoid)- contains chlorophyll
3 Starch grain- stores form of glucose
4 Double membrane- allows entry of water and CO2
5 Ribosome- forms enzymes for photosynthesis
6 Granum- consists of groups of lamella
what are the 8 adaptations of leaves for photosynthesis?
1 Epidermis- transparent to allow light through
2 Cuticle- waxy to reduce water loss
3 Spongy mesophyll- Thin walls for entry of CO2 and water
4 Xylem- Continuous tubes for transport of water and minerals
5 phloem- Transports the products to other parts of plant
6 Guard cell- Chloroplasts present to trap light and thick and thin walls to control opening and closing of stomata
7 Stoma - Abundant on central surface for exchange of gases
8 Palisade Mesophyll- Elongate cells allow deep penetration of light
what is the greenhouse effect?
The process that occurs when the sun’s rays go through the Earths atmosphere and is then trapped by greenhouse gases instead of retiring back to space, as a result, the planet heats up
what is a greenhouse?
a greenhouse is a special building that is used to grow plants in an area where they wouldn’t normally grow that well
define photosynthesis
the process where green plants manufacture their own food- glucose- from CO2 and H20 using radiant energy from the sun trapped by chlorophyll in chloroplast and oxygen is a by-product
