Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis
water + carbon dioxide —- light—–> glucose + oxygen
6H2O + 6CO2 —————-Light——> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Is photosynthesis endo or exothermic?
Endothermic because it requires energy from sunlight
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the chloroplasts which are mainly in the top layer of cells in a leaf- the palisade mesophyll. This allows them to gather the most sunlight.
What is chlorophyll?
A green pigment found in the chloroplasts in plants, essential for photosynthesis.
What is a limiting factor?
Something which reduces or stops a reaction from happening.
Identify the limiting factors for the photosynthesis chemical reaction
- low temperature
- shortage of CO2
- shortage of light
- shortage of chlorophyll
What does the term yield mean?
The amount of a substance which is produced
How do growers ensure better yields in their plants?
- Use heaters/greenhouses/polytunnels to keep temperatures higher
- Use burners to produce more CO2
- Maximise light - sometimes use growlights
- Use chemical fertilisers to ensure they have the correct nutrients- eg Mg to produce chlorophyll
How do plants use the glucose produced in photosynthesis
1 Used in respiration
2 converted into insoluble starch and stored eg ina potato tuber
3. Converted into fats and oils and stored eg in olives
4. used to make cellulose to strengthen the cell wall
5. combined with nitrate ions to make amino acids in protein synthesis.
