Q

Where does photosynthesis occur?

A

In the chloroplasts which are mainly in the top layer of cells in a leaf- the palisade mesophyll. This allows them to gather the most sunlight.

Q

How do growers ensure better yields in their plants?

A
  1. Use heaters/greenhouses/polytunnels to keep temperatures higher
  2. Use burners to produce more CO2
  3. Maximise light - sometimes use growlights
  4. Use chemical fertilisers to ensure they have the correct nutrients- eg Mg to produce chlorophyll

Q

How do plants use the glucose produced in photosynthesis

A

1 Used in respiration
2 converted into insoluble starch and stored eg ina potato tuber
3. Converted into fats and oils and stored eg in olives
4. used to make cellulose to strengthen the cell wall
5. combined with nitrate ions to make amino acids in protein synthesis.
