Photosynthesis Flashcards
What does ‘reactant’ mean?
Reactants are the things the plants needs to photosynthesise and they are on the LHS of the equation.
What does ‘product’ mean?
Products are the things the plants produce in photosynthesis and they are on the RHS of the equation.
What are the reactants of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide and water
Is sunlight a reactants? Is it included in the reaction?
Not a reactants but included in the LHS of the equation
What are the products of photosynthesis?
Glucose and Oxygen (by-product)
What is the by-product in photosynthesis?
Oxygen - because it makes it by accident while trying to make glucose.
What’s the test for oxygen?
You put a glowing splint in a test tube of oxygen –> if it relights then oxygen is present.
What’s the test for carbon dioxide?
You bubble a gas through limewater –> turns cloudy = carbon dioxide present
Where does photosynthesis happen in a plant cell?
It happens in the chloroplasts
What is the name of the pigment in chloroplasts and what colour is it? What does it do?
Chlorophyll
Green
Captures/absorbs sunlight/ light energy from sunlight
What is the definition of photosynthesis?
It is a method used by green plants containing the green pigment, chlorophyll, to synthesise nutrients (glucose) from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight, producing oxygen as a by-product, involving chlorophyll
What factors increase the rate of photosynthesis?
More carbon dioxide, water and light intensity
How do plants store energy?
They store it as starch
What is the test for starch?
Add iodine –> goes from orange to bluey-black
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide + water + sunlight –> glucose + oxygen
