Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
What organelles are found in an animal cell?
Cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, cytoplasm, ribosomes
What is an organelle?
A specialised structure inside a living cell which carries out a specific function which allows the cell to live
What shape is an animal cell?
Round in shape
What shape is a plant cell?
Rectangular
What organelles are found in a plant cell?
Vacuole, cell wall, cell membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm, ribosomes, chloroplasts, nucleus
Which organelles are found in both animal and plant cells?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria, Ribosomes, Cell Membrane
Which organelles are only found in plant cells?
Vacuole, cell wall, chloroplasts
Which organelles are only found in animal cells?
None - all organelles in animal cells are also in plant cells
True/false: animal cells have a cell wall
False - they only have a cell membrane
True/false: plant cells have a cell membrane
True - they have both a cell membrane AND a cell wall
Draw a labelled animal cell
(See mind map in revision folder)
Draw a labelled plant cell
(See mind map in revision folder)
What is the cytoplasm and what is its function?
A jelly-like substance
Where vital chemical reactions and activities happen in a cell
What is the function of mitochondria?
Powerhouse of the cell - Where energy is released from glucose in respiration
What is the function of chloroplasts and what are they?
Green discs in plant cells which contain the green pigment chlorophyll
Where food/nutrients (glucose) are produced using light energy from the sun in photosynthesis
What is the function of the vacuole?
A storage space filled with cell sap containing nutrients such as water, salts, proteins and carbohydrates
What is the function of the cell wall?
A tough, inelastic outer case which supports the cell and stops it bursting
What is the function of the nucleus?
Control centre of the cell - Controls the cell and contains DNA
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Keeps the cell together and controls what goes into and out of the cell
What is a unicellular organism?
An organism made up of only one cell
What is a multicellular organism?
An organism made up of more than one cell where each type of cell contributes a different function
Give an example of a unicellular organism
Bacteria (e.g. salmonella, E. Coli), fungi (only yeast), some protoctista (e.g. paramecia)
Give an example of a multicellular organism
Animal (e.g. dog), plants (e.g. sunflower), fungi (e.g. mushrooms), some protoctista (e.g. sea lettuce)
Define pigment
A coloured chemical compound that absorbs light which provides the energy used in photosynthesis, and which produces colour by reflecting only certain colours of visible light
