Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are Chemical Reactions?
Chemical reaction- process that rearranges the atoms of one or more substances into one or more new substances
Chemical Reactions contain what TWO things?
1) Reactants and
2 Products
What are Reactants?
Reactants- ingredients that we start with
Always written on the left side of arrow
What are Products?
Products- what we end up with
Always written on the right side of arrow
What is Photosynthesis?
Process of a plant cell using the energy in sunlight to make its food (glucose)
Sunlight, carbon dioxide and water create a chemical reaction to make glucose and oxygen
What is Pigment?
Pigment- a molecule that absorbs some colors but reflects others
What are examples of Pigment?
The pigment (chlorophyll) in plants absorb red and blue light but reflects green. This reflection (bouncing of light rays) makes plants look green. Beta carotene is the orange pigment in carrots and lycopene is the red pigment found in tomatoes
If plants absorbed all colors what would happen?
f plants absorbed all colors they would overheat and die
All of this is caused by chemical reactions
What organelle does photosynthesis occur in?
Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll that absorbs sunlight and converts it to glucose.
What types of cells do photosynthesis?
Plant cells
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Sunlight + 6 H2O + 6 CO2 → C6H12O6 + 6 O2
