Fonts
Font
A set of characters with a similar appearance, size, and color
Vector Fonts
Outline Type
Bitmap
type composed of pixels, and, like bitmap images can develop jagged edges when enlarged
Font Family
A complete set of characters, letters, and symbols for a particular type
Serif
Fonts with a tail or stroke at the end of some characters
Sans Serif
Fonts without tails that are ommonly used in headlines
Points
The measurement in which type characters are measured
Monotype
A spacing type where all characters take the same amount of space
Proportional
A spacing type where all characters take different amount of space
Kerning
Controlling the amount of space a character can take up
Tracking
Making every character the same amount of space
Leading
Changing the amount of space a character can take up
Layer Styles
Effects which can be applied to a type or image layer
Anti-aliasing
A feature that partially fills in pixel edges with additional colors
3D extrusion
A tool for turning a 2-dimensional object into a 3-dimensional object
Rasterized
The process of converting a normal layer to an image layer
Drop Shadow
A effect that creates an illusion that another colored layer of identical text is behind the selected type
Baseline
The invisible line that type rests on
Blending Mode
A feature that affects a layer’s underlying pixels and is used to lighten or darken colors
Crop
A process in excluding certain parts of an image
Flattening
Merging all visible layers into a single background layer and discards all hidden layers
Layer Comp
A variation on the arrangement and visibility of existing layers
Layer Thumbnail
A menu that appears to the left of the layer name and contains a miniature picture of the layers contents
Marquee
A dashed line that encloses the area you want to edit or move to another image
Merging
A process in which you combine multiple layers into one
Object Layers
A layer containing one or more images
Opacity
The ability to see through a layer so that layers beneath it are visable
Selection
A portion of of an image
Fastening point
An anchor within the marquee
Mask
Lets you protect or modify a particular area and is created using a marquee
Compositing
Combining images from different sources
Clipboard
The temporary storage area provided by your operating system
